Today in Grade 3
Thursday January 5th, 2012
Today in Grade 3 we:
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- began working on Sorting Polygons in Math. Students started by working with a partner and sorting groups of 14 polygons any way they could. They worked on pp. 213-214 #'s 1, 3, and 4 in their textbook
- had DEAR time
- finished working on our mapping questions in Social Studies. Students got more time to work on the questions and we corrected them as a class
- wrote down our Daily News
- continued reading The BFG
- had discussion about all the things that we do in the Winter and made a word web based on it. Students then had to write a story about what they do during the Winter time.
- began discussing Diagrams in Canadian Writing. We did a diagram of a face and of a hockey rink. Students then talked about what we would diagram in the classroom. Tomorrow they will begin making a diagram by themselves.
Wednesday January 4th, 2012
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Polygons for our class Kickstart
- played a Polygon game using our Geoboards in Math. Students then worked on pp. 92-93 in their workbooks
- continued working on reading a Map of Canada in Canadian Reading. We reviewed all the province and territories and then the students continued their work in their books
- had DEAR time
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- worked on describing where Newfoundland and Labrador is compared with the rest of the world in Social Studies. We began by looking at different parts of the world on Google Earth and how we would desribe them. Students then worked with a legend, a compass rose, and scale to answer questions about a Map of North America
- had Daily News
- continued reading The BFG
- continued working on dipthongs in Phonics. We reviewed the dipthongs from yesterday and looked at some new ones. Students then worked on pp. 107-108 of their Phonics book independently
Tuesday January 3rd, 2012
Today in Grade 3 we:
- reviewed our clasroom procedures, so they would be fresh in our minds after Christmas
- began our new unit in Math, Geometry. Today we looked at polygons and students got to practice making them using Geoboards. We then learned the names for polygons with different numbers of sides and students completed pp. 210-211 #'s 2, 3, and 4 independently
- talked about the Feast of the Epiphany which is happening this Sunday. It is the end of the Christmas season and celebrates when the Magi came to visit Jesus.
- had DEAR time
- worked on reading maps in Canadian Reading. We looked at a map of Canada and discussed the various features of it and of maps in general. Students then had to complete comprehension questions indepenedently
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- wrote down our Daily News
- began a new Roald Dahl book call The BFG. The story is of an orphan Sophie, and a giant
- worked on dipthongs in Phonics. A Dipthongs is when two letters combine to make one vowel sound. Students worked on pp. 105-106 of their book, most finished in class
Friday October 30th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- wrote down our Daily News as our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had our Spelling Test
- continued reading The Witches. Today our narrator was turned into a mice by the Grand High Witch
- went Swimming at the Aquarena
- had Choir with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time
- began looking at counting by 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s in Math. We worked using a number line as a group and then students had to fill in 100 charts up to 1000 using different patterns
- picked from the Treasure Chest and had Fun Friday

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Comparing Numbers worksheet for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- played a game of "I have...Who has" to begin our Math lesson
- continued discussing "How Much is 1000?" we discussed ways of representing 1000 and continued talking about when it is a big number and when it is a small number. Students then worked on pp. 34-35 of theri Workbook
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- worked on Compound words in Phonics. We discussed what they were, then students came up with examples. Finally, students did two pages in their Phonics book building and recognizing them
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- continued reading The Witches. Today the witches began their scheme to read England of all children
- had Gym with Mr. Foley
- looked at our Popcorn kernels in Science. We separated them into sprouted and unsprouted and then discussed why we thought some seeds sprouted while other didnt
Tuesday October 25th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on a Halloween Colouring booklet for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- continued working on Comparing and Ordering Numbers in Math. We did a bunch of examples on the board and then students completed pp. 22-23 #'s 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 in their workbooks
- did our Chapter Review in Religion. Students worked with their tables and completed the review, we then corrected it as a class
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please note that Report Cards go home tomorrow
- continued working on Consonant Blends in Phonics. Students worked on pg. 57 independenly and we corrected it as a class. Students then had to write a letter, pretending they were a spider inviting a fly over to play.
- continued reading The Witches. Today the Grand High Witch revealed her plans to eliminate all the children from England using Candy and Chocolate to help her plan
- read a story about the origins of Hallowe'en and answered comprehension questions on it independently
- had Gym with Mr. Foley to end the day again
Monday October 24th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a "Greater than/Less than" activity sheet for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- worked on Comparing and Ordering numbers in Math. We discussed using our knowledge of Place Value to order and compare numbers accurately. Students then completed pp. 52-53 #'s 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 independently. Most students got to question 5 or 6
- read about Saint Martin of Tours and how he showed love for his fellow man. Students then wrote 4 ways that they could be loving at school, at home, at Church, and in their communities. We closed our lesson by doing the prayer service for the end of this unit
- had DEAR time
- continued working on consonant blends in Phonics. Today we looked at s blends and blends at the end of words. Students worked on pp. 55-56 of their workbook after this
- learned about Alliteration using our Halloween Booklets. As a class we developed several tongue twisters using alliteration, then students had to come up with 3 of their own and illustrate their favorite one
- wrote down our Daily News. Please remember to sign your child's spelling test
- read more of The Witches. Today the Grand High Witch was finally revealed and our narrator is trapped in a room with 200 witches.
- looked at dirt when it is wet today in Science. Students had to come up with as many adjectives for the wet dirt as possible
- had Gym with Mr. Foley to end our day

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on ordering numbers from least to greatest for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had Music with Ms. Swain
- had our snack before swimming
- went swimming
- had our snack after swimming
- had our weekly spelling test
- continued reading The Witches. Today we learned a little more about the Grand High Witch and how witches in England like to behave
- had Ms. Hackett (the school guidance Counselor) come in and do an activity with the students. They discussed how to be a friend, and each student drew a picture and wrote several sentences about what a good friend does
- began working on comparing and ordering numbers. Students were introduced to the > "greater than" and < "less than" symbols for the first time
- played in the classroom for Fun Friday
Thursday October 20th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Halloween Word Search as our Class Kickstart before announcements
- played another game of silent "I have...Who Has?" The students are getting very close to organizing themselves correctly
- continued to look at representing numbers in many ways in Math. Students should have Standard Form, Base Ten Name, Pictures, and Place-Value Charts mastered by now. The students completed pp. 20-21 in their workbooks. Most finished it during class time
- had our Spelling Pretest
- discussed what loving our Neighbour means in Religion. We talked about how even the people we may not get along with are still deserving of our love and respect. Students then drew a picture in their book about someone showing love and respect for a neighbour
- had DEAR time
- had French with Ms. Swain (Ms. Gatherall is gone with the Music Program)
- began working on Consonant blends in Phonics. We came up with a lot of examples of words that start with consonant blends as a class. Then students worked on pp. 53-54 independently
- wrote down our Daily News. Please remember book orders are due tomorrow
- continued working on our Graphic stories in Canadian Reading. Today the students had to work on an alternate ending for "Jack and the Beanstalk", they had to illustrate the last 7 frames of a story
Wednesday October 19th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on representing numbers in different ways using Base ten blocks for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- looked at "Showing Numbers in Different Ways" in Math. This is a new lesson builds heavily on the previous few days works. We did some review as a class then students complete pp. 46-47 #'s 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 independently
- played a game of "I have...Who Has?" with a twist today. I lined the students up and gave them each a card with a number and place values on it. They had to line up in the correct order without speaking. We tried twice and they got close the second time, we will try it again tomorrow
- had DEAR time
- looked at our Popcorn Kernels in Science. Each student had to decide if their kernel needed more water or not. We then discussed whether soil absorbs water and did an experiment to test this theory
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- wrote down our Daily News. Please remember to return all Walk-a-thon money ASAP
- continued reading The Witches. Today we continued finding out ways to identify a real witch
- began working on syllables in Phonics. Students have been doing syllables since Kindergarten so hopefully this will be an easy unit. Students completely pp. 51-52 independently and most finished in class
- read a story in our Halloween booklet titled Phil's Costume Surprise and then answered some comprehension questions on it
Tuesday October 18th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- converted numbers in Standard form to Base Ten Names for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had Gym with Mr. Foley
- read a story about Jesus healing a paralyzed beggar in Religion. After this we discussed how certain gifts we receive from people, such as love, are better than the material things that we have in our lives. Students then did a puzzle activity in their books
- played a game of "I have...Who has?" before Recess. The students are getting quite good at understanding Place Value in this game
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- continued working on ways to model 1000 in Math. We reviewed yesterdays homework and students then complete pp. 18-19 #'s 1, 1, 2, and 3 in their Workbook independently.
- read a story about Ballet in our Phonics books then had a discussion about what stories we would like to see performed as a Ballet. After this, students completed their assessment page in their books to finish up our unit on Vowel sounds
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember Book Orders are due on Friday
- read a graphic comic about "Jack and the Beanstalk" in Canadian Reading. The student read the story together as a group and answered some comprehension questions and got an opportunity to do begin writing a graphic comic themselves
- looked at our popcorn kernels to see if there was any progress, not surprisingly there was none yet
Monday October 17th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- filled in a Place Value Chart for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had DEAR Time
- discussed how We Show Love for One Another and did an activity based on this in Religion
- played a game of "I have...Who Has" in Math. After this we reviewed how to fill in a Place Value Chart, how to write a Base Ten Name, and how to represent the same number in different ways using Base ten Blocks. Students then completed pg. 44 #'s 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 independently. We corrected #1 as a class
- read a story about Mozart in Phonics and answered questions as a class. After this students worked independently on a paragraph speaking about something musical they like or dislike
- had Primary Choir with Ms. Gatherall
- began working on our Halloween Language Arts booklets. Students got to colour their covers today and then had to do an "Events Workshop" They had to cut out a story sequence that was not in the correct order and glue them on another sheet in the correct order
- wrote down our Daily News. Book Orders are due on Friday
- read more of The Witches. Today we found out about our main character and why he lives with his grandmother
- did a Science experiment about Roots. Each student has a popcorn kernel put in a plastic cup with wet paper towel and potting soil around it. Hopefully over the coming days we will see the root grows out from the kernel

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Word Search for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- played a game of "I have...Who Has?" in Math. We then discussed using Place Value Charts and Base Ten Names. Students will have homework on these topics on Monday
- had a Snack before Swimming
- went Swimming at the Aquarena
- had a Snack after Swimming
- finished up our Class Dictionary
- began reading The Witches, by Roald Dahl. This is a larger novel and will take us up to Halloween. It is a story about a young boy, his grandmother, and a group of witches
- went to Mass at St. Pius X. Students behaved extremely well, especially considering it was Friday afternoon
- had Fun Friday when we got back from Mass
Thursday October 13th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Base Ten and Place Value worksheet for Class Kickstart before Announcements
- played a game of "I have....Who has....?" in Math. Students are given a Card with a Number and a Sentence on it. They read the number using Place Value language and the student who has the other number then reads their card until all cards are read. We then discussed using Place Value Charts and Base Ten Names. There is no Homework as a treat on Walk-a-thon Day
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time
- wrote down our Daily News
- worked on our Picture Dictionary, most students are finished and the others will finish tomorrow
- had an early lunch for Walk-a-thon Day
- went to Bowring Park for the Walk-a-thon. It went great and the students were very well behaved
- got back to school and had 10 minutes of playtime before it was time to go home

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Place Value Matching sheet as our Class Kickstart before Announcements
- continued working on Place Value and Counting in Math. Students had more time using Base Ten blocks and working with their tables. After this students complete pp. 16-17 in their Math Workbook, most students finished this in class
- had a Fire Drill for Fire Prevention Week, the students were fantastic!!
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- continued working on our Picture Dictionary in Canadian Writing. Students worked on and for the most part finished their first drafts. We will hopefully finish this by weeks end
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please note that the Walk-a-thon is a GO for tomorrow
- read John Phillip Duck for Read Aloud. It is a story about a boy, Edward, who works at a hotel and has a pet duck who likes to march

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a colour by numbers sheet for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- began our new unit in math, "Numbers to 1000" Today we discussed place value and how to represent numbers using base ten blocks. All students got several opportunities to use the blocks to make numbers. We then worked on pp. 40-41 #'s 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 independently. We corrected some as a class
- looked at all short and long vowel sounds in Phonics today and students wrote a paragraph giving instruction on singing a song, doing a dance, or playing an instrument.
- learned about nouns in Canadian Writing. We did several activities to familiarize ourselves with what is and isn't a noun. We are doing this because students started to make a Picture Dictionary today and we will use nouns for all our entries. Each student has a letter and we will work on this throughout the week
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- read Dirty Locks and the Three Bears for Read Aloud. It is another Fractured Fairy Tale based on Goldilocks
- discussed different types of soil in Science and how climate influences the quality and type of soil in any given area

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on a Thanksgiving Word Search as our Class Kickstart
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- ate a snack before Swimming
- had our first Swimming lessons at the Aquarena
- ate another snack when we got back from swimming
- corrected pp. 39-40 in Phonics as a class. We then looked at the ways to make the long e sound and students worked on pp. 41-42 in their book

Today in Grade 3 we:
- edited a paragraph for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- got our Math Test back and went through it as a class. All the students did very well and I was quite happy with the results!
- read the book How Much, How Many, How Far, How Heavy, How Long, How Tall is 1000? This book is an introduction to our new unit in Math, numbers to 1000
- did our chapter review in Religion. Students worked with their tables discussing and answering questions about the different topics we've done in the past few weeks
- had Family Groups for our Harvest Service in the Gym
- had our Litterless-Lunch
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- finished reading George's Marvelous Medicine.
- worked on the long u sound in Phonics. Students worked on pp. 39-40. If they didn't finish it, it is not homework, we will correct it tomorrow as a class

Today in Grade 3 we:
- had our first Math test. Students felt relieved after it was over and realized the questions were no different then the ones we had done as a class all month. They will be returned tomorrow. (hopefully)
- corrected our long i work in Phonics and discussed the long o sound. Students then completed pp. 37-38 of their books
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time
- finished working on our Thanksgiving Acrostics. They are now hanging proudly in the classroom
- had Daily News. Please note that the Walk-a-Thon is postponed, but all other events are on for tomorrow
- discussed why soils are different in Science. The students will get to pick through different types of soil in the coming days to see the differences we discussed today

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Decreasing Patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had Gym with Mr. Foley
- read a story about the first Thanksgiving and began writing Thanksgiving Acrostic poems, we got our 1st drafts done today
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- corrected our long a work in Phonics and began the long i sound. Students worked on pp. 35-36 of their books
- reviewed Decreasing Patterns in Math. We did a bunch of examples on the board and students complete pp. 33 #6-8. We then corrected all the review questions as a class
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- continued reading Georges's Marvelous Medicine. Today George gave his medicine to a group of animals with some fantastic results

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did increasing patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- reviewed increasing patterns in Math. We did a lot of examples on the board and then students worked on pp. 32-33 #1-5 independently
- discussed how we can welcoming and sharing to people to show that everyone is part of the Church as a family
- worked on Graphs in Canadian Reading. Students had to use 2 bar graphs to answer comprehension questions in their books.
- had Primary Choir with Ms. Gatherall
- began working on long vowel sounds in Phonics. Today we did the long a phonogram and students worked on pp. 33-34 in their book
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- continued reading George's Marvelous Medicine for Read Aloud
- had table discussions about different things that live in soils. Students then had to look at pictures and find the different creatures that were discussed

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Decreasing Number Patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- found out that our Saint of the Week, Jean De Brebeuf, was Martyr for the Church. We then discussed the annual Martyr's Mass we have at school
- corrected our Math homework we had last night as a class, then continued reviewing Decreasing Number Patterns. Students worked on pp. 14-15 in their Workbook independently. This was our last lesson in this unit and we will review on Friday, Monday and Tuesday for the math test
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- worked on the Short e sound in Phonics. Students worked on pp. 31-32 of their student book. Most completed it in class
- had our second Fire Drill of the year. Students behaved perfectly, it was great to see
- finished our List Poems in Canadian Writing and did a Language lesson about word order in sentences after we finished this
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember tomorrow is a Jeans Day
- continued reading George's Marvelous Medicine. Today Grandma finally took the medicine, with some interesting results
- did a Journal activity about something that has happened the first month of school. We will do this activity at the end of every month to help the students learn about reflecting on events in their lives
- went outside and looked for living things in the soil, trees, and grass around the field. Students found lots of interesting items
Wednesday September 28th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Decreasing Patterns before announcements for our Class Kickstart
- learned that our Saint of the Week, Jean De Brebeuf, lived from 1593-1649
- corrected last nights Math homework as a class. Began Decreasing Number Patterns, we did a lot of examples on the board, then students had to work on pp. 30-31 #'s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Since there were so many problems they were given 30 minutes to work on it in class.
- continued talking about the Sacraments of Initiation and how we can make people feel welcome in Religion
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- corrected pp. 27-38 in Phonics and began the short u sound. We had students act out different short u words to get used to the short u sound. Then students completed pp. 29-30 independently
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember Swimming and Annie Forms
- had Read Aloud. Today George continued to add things to his "medicine" for his Grandmother
- continued working on our List Poems in Canadian Writing, we will hopefully finish them tomorrow

Tuesday September 27th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Comparing and Creating Decreasing Patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- corrected pp. 26-27 in Math. Continued working on Comparing Decreasing Patterns using our Workbooks. Students worked on pp. 12-13 #'s 1, 1, 2, and SYT independently
- discussed composting in Science. We talked about how our School has a Composting Program. We made our own miniature composting using a freezer bag. After the frost comes and the wasps disper, we will be going to the large compost bins on campus with Mr. Peters to have a look at composted materials in the later stages of decomposition
- reviewed the Short i sound in Phonic and began work on the short o sound. Students worked on pp. 27-28 of their books
- continued our List Poems in Canadian Writing. After students finish their final draft tomorrow we are going to make a List Poem book that the students can take out of the Class Library to read
- had Gym with Mr. Foley
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please note Book Orders are due tomorrow
- continued reading George's Marvelous Medicine. Today George devised a plan to get his cranky grandmother
- had another discussion about Bullying based on a picture book we read last Friday. We discussed how we can help our friends when they are being bullied and how to walk about from bullying when it happens to us
Monday September 26th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Comparing Decreasing Patterns before announcements
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- completed our work on the Short a sound in Phonics. We then looked at the short i sound and students worked on pp. 25-26 independently
- corrected pp. 10-11 in our Math Workbook, which we began on Friday. Then we began Comparing and Constructing Decreasing Patterns. Students worked using manipulatives to create patterns to compare, then worked on pp. 26-27 #'s 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the text book.
- had our first firedrill of the year. Students did great and we had a discussion about fire safety afterwards
- Began working on "List Poems" in Canadian Writing. we are doing list poems based on different emotions. Students need to come up with an adjective and noun or verb for each line of their poem. When we are finished we will be doing a class book of the poems
- had DEAR time and Daily News.
- began reading George's Marvelous Medicine for Read Aloud. It is another Roald Dahl book and is about a boy, George, and his nasty Grandma.
- discussed the different types of soil in Science. We learned about sand, slit, clary, organic matter, and humus and discussed how each item is created

Today in Grade 3 we:
- had freetime for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- continued exploring decreasing patterns in Math today. We did a lot of practice on the board, then students completed pp. 10-11 of their workbook and we corrected it as a class
- discussed Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion in religion and students did several activities in their books based on these themes
- finsihed working on our Book Covers in Canadian Reading. Students did a great job and their book covers are now decorating our class
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember that Sunday is Sports Day at St. Bon's
- read Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns about Bullies. It is a story about bullying, after the story we discussed the issue of bullying and how we can prevent it in our class and at our school

- began decreasing patterns in Math. Today we used blocks and worked in our groups to do lots of decreasing patterns and to explain the rules for them

- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time and Daily News.
- read Dinorella for Read Aloud. It is another fractured Fairy Tale
- started working on big copies of our book covers in Canadian Reading. We will finish them tomorrow

Today in Grade 3 we:
- got most of our Scholastic Order. Some book are on Backorder and will be here in several weeks
- had DEAR time for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- had Gym with Mr. Foley
- finished our chapter review as a class in Religion.
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- read a story about Migrating Birds in Phonics and discussed why and how birds migrate. We then completed the final sheet of our first unit
- did a review sheet on increasing patterns in Math. Tomorrow we will be switching to decreasing patterns, so I wanted to check the students understanding before we changed topics
- read The True Story of the Big Bad Wolf it is a fractured Fairy Tale in which the Wolf explains how he was framed
- had DEAR time and Daily News
- continued working on Covers in Canadian Writing. Today the students had to pick a book and create a new cover for it, giving all the important information that is needed on the cover of the book

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on increasing number patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- continued with increasing number patterns in Math. We spent a fair bit of time reviewing the concept. After this the students complete pp. 8-9 #1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 in their Workbook

- Wrote a paragraph about animal watching in Phonics on pg. 18. Students had to use at least 6 words from a word box to describe the behaviour of a specific animal
- had Primary Choir with Ms. Gatherall
- looked at what the Cover of a book tells us in Canadian Reading. We discussed all the information you can find before you ever read the inside of a book. Students then answered comprehension questions about two book covers in their workbook
- had Daily News and DEAR time. Please remember to sign spelling tests and return them
- read Fall is Here, I Love It, for Read Aloud and discussed reasons we love Fall

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did unfinished work in Math and Canadian Writing as our Class Kickstart before announcements
- found out that our Saint of the Week is Emily de Rodat
- began working with increasing number patterns in Math. Students have to take skip counting (3, 6, 9) and explain the pattern rules for them. We worked on pg. 17 #'s 1, 2, 3, and 4
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- read the story The Bird Feeder Mystery in Phonics and answered two questions. I am trying to make sure students use full sentences to answer questions so we reviewed this strategy after the lesson
- finished our lists in Canadian Writing and did a Language Link lesson about word order in sentences
- had Gym with Mr. Foley to begin our afternoon
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember to sign your childs Daily News each night
- got our Spelling tests back and got our new list and activities for this week
- read Click Clack Moo for Read Aloud. It is about Cows who learn to use technology

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- learned that our Saint of the Week, Francis of St. Bonaventure, is the Patron Saint of Catechists
- continued working on Comparing Increasing Patterns in Math. Each student was given a pattern and how to make a pattern that started the same way but grew differently using manipulatives. We then completed pp. 13-14 #1 and 3 and corrected them as a class. We also reviewed the proper way to use our duotang folders
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- had our First spelling Test of the year. The new list was supposed to go home; however do to the early school closure I didn't get it out. It will go home Monday
- continued working on our Lists. Today we ensured that our list items were in proper order and written in complete sentence
- did Daily News
- went home early...YAY!!!

Today in Grade 3 we:
- edited a paragraph for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- read stories independently and answered questions about the stories for most of the morning
- drew days for using the reading rug. 5 Students a day will get to use the reading rug during DEAR time
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- started comparing Increasing Patterns in Math. Students have to compare 2 patterns and explain how they are similar and how they are different. Students completed pp. 5 and 6 in their workbook and we corrected it as a class
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please remember Curriculum night is tonight
- had our Spelling Pretest
- did a classroom cleanup for Curriculum Night

Today in Grade 3 we:
- did a Word Search as our Class Kickstart before announcements
- found out that our Saint of the Week, Francis of Bonaventure, died in 1622, his year of birth is unknown
- continued with Creating Increasing Patterns in Math. We reviewed how to do as a class and then students worked on pp. 4-5 of their Student Workbook, almost all students got this completely finished independently
- wrote an article about how to explain Autumn to alien in Phonics. Students had to use words that we have been working with in their paragraph.
- began using our Canadian Writing books for the first time this year. Today we looked at how to make a clear and concise list. We started by making a list of class rules on the board, then students had to brainstorm ideas for a list they would like to do. Finally, we made a list for our bedtime routine as a class. Tomorrow the students will write their list out and read it to their classmates
- had our full School Photo done on the field
- had Gym with Mr. Foley.
- finished Esio Trot. Today Mr. Hoppy completed his plan with wonderful results

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Pattern Rules for our Class Kickstart, students seem to be doing really well with understanding this concept
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall. Please send in a bag for students to carry their recorder in
- learned that our Saint of the Week, Francis of St. Bonaventure, lived in Japan
- began creating increasing patterns in Math. We did several examples as a class and then the students completed #'s 1, 3, and 4 on pg. 11 of their textbook. Most students had it finished in school
- finished working on Mark and Louie Go to a Parade in Canadian Reading. Today we answered questions about reading comprehension and how pictures help you "read" a story
- discussed what the Church does for us in Religion. The students then wrote a letter explaining to someone what they know about the Church. After this we discussed how we need to treat people and did an activity about this
- did a review of S sounds, G sounds, C sounds in Phonics. Students had to compare words that had all the different sounds in them on pp. 14-15.
- wrote down our Daily News. Please note that tomorrow is a Full Uniform Day for the full school picture
Monday September 12th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- finished Phonics pp. 10-11 and worked on patterns for our Class Kickstart before announcements
- learned that our first Saint of the week is Francis of St. Bonaventure. Each week will learn five facts about a Saint
- continued working with Increasing Patterns in Math. Students are beginning to understand how a "Pattern Rule" works and most did great with pp. 2-3 of their Workbook. Anything that was not finished is homework
- continued discussing what Newfoundland is like in Social Studies. We added on to our physical descriptions of our province and learned about our government and history today
- began working on Soft and hard G sounds as well as S sounds in Phonics on pp. 12-13
- had our School Pictures taken
- had French with Ms. Gatherall
- finished working on Phonics pp. 12-13 after lunch
- looked at Soil in Science. Our first unit is "Down Under" and students began by looking at soil with magnifying glasses and a partner to see what they could find in the soil. Apologies if uniforms are dirty, we did our best to stay clean

- continued reading Esio Trot. Today Mr. Hoppy put his plan to win Ms. Silver into action
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Tonight is our first night with homework in multiple subjects, in Grade 3 30 minutes of homework is standard. Please start with Math, as it is most important that they get this finished
- got our first spelling list for the year. Students have an activity for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The words are G words and C words this week

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on Handwriting pg. 4 for our Classroom Kickstart before announcements
- did our first math lesson. We completing pg. 8 #'s 1, 3, and 4 as a class. Students got to really use their notebooks for the first time today. Please ensure that when math homework starts going home next week your child is very neat in doing their work on the loose leaf. We will continue to review how to use the notebook for the next week to make sure everyone has it mastered
- had our first Social Studies lesson. The students are lucky this year as they are using a brand new Social Studies book. Today we discussed how to describe our province and the students had to try to find a way to describe where Newfoundland is located in the world
- continued working on the story Louie and Mark Go to a Parade in Canadian Reading. Today the students had to draw another page of the story and add their own caption.
- finished working with placing Consonants in words in Phonics. After this the we began work on the hard C and Soft C sounds and how to distinguish between the two. Students seemed to find this quite easy
- read more of Esio Trot during Read Aloud. Today we found out what Mr. Hoppy's plan was regarding Mrs. Silver and her pet tortoise.
- had Music with Ms. Gatherall
- had DEAR time and Daily News. Please note that Monday is picture day so full uniforms are required.
- had Fun Friday. Since it was so nice out we simply went outside and played on the field

Today in Grade 3 we:
- worked on extending a given pattern using math blocks before morning announcements
- had our first Gym class of the year with Mr. Foley. Please remember students need a pair of shoes for the Gym Only
- discussed different prayers in Religion. We talked about "The Lord's Prayer", "The Sign of the Cross", the "Haily Mary", and the "Glory Be." After this we talked about getting Good News and how exciting it can be. the students then wrote a pretend email to someone telling about a piece of Good News they have gotten in life.
- had our first French class of the year with Ms. Gatherall
- began learning how to use notebooks in Math. Students have a Blue Duotang for use with their Math textbooks. They learned that the Date and page number went on the top of their page and how to write the answers to questions neatly.
- continued working on Consonants in Phonics. Today we looked at consonants at the middle and the end of words. Students completed pages 8 and 9 of their workbook
- read Louie and Mark Go to a Parade in Canadian Reading. After we read it the students answered some multiple choice and short answer questions in their book.
- began reading Esio Trot, by Roald Dahl during Read-Aloud. It is the story of Mr. Hoppy who is jealous of a tortiose and devises a plan to solve his problem.
- wrote down our Daily News. Please note that the Consumable book list went home today
- had DEAR time to end our day
Wednesday September 7th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- did our Handwriting Pretest as our Morning Kickstart before announcements
- brainstormed a list of rules that will help make our classroom and safe and happy place to be for this school year
- discussed what we have to do during a firedrill
- filled out a 100 Chart in Math and played a guessing game, using clues to guess numbers, this was a start to our Patterns Unit which we will be working on for most of September
- did an Art Activity. The students put their names on a t-shirt, then wrote an activity that they like under it. Finally, they coloured the shirts and cut them out to be hung in the classroom
- had Primary Choir for the first time this year.
- did our first Phonics lesson of the year. We discussed consonants and read a poem "Autumn Leaves." Students then completed pg. 7 of their workbook
- got our "If Finished" Books. This is a book of activities students will work on when they finish work and others are still working
- read The Big Bad Wolf is Good. Later this year we will be doing a mixed up Fairy tale unit and I wanted to introduce the students to it. In the book the Big Bad Wolf keeps trying to do good, but no one believes him
- wrote down our Daily News. Please see homework section for details
- had DEAR time (Silent reading)
- filled out our Class Birthday Chart so we know when everybodies birthday is
Tuesday September 6th, 2011
Today in Grade 3 we:
- had a Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- got picked up from the Aula and brought to our Grade 3 class
- found our seats by playing the birthday game
- discussed as favorite memory we had of Grade 2
- discussed some class rules that will be important throughout the year
- read the story Just The Way You Are by Max Lucado. It is about a young girl who does not think she has any talents to offer her King
- found out that there would be a competition between tables at Mass. There were 4 questions that needed to answer after Mass about things that happened. They will find out the winner tomorrow
- met our Gym teacher for this year Mr. Foley
- got lockers and placed our bookbags and lunch bags in them
- wrote down our Daily News (please see Homework Section)
- began working on our "All About Me" posters, the large copy went home as work for the coming week
- began learning our class prayers
- got our 1st Scholastic order of the year, due back next Monday
